Distributor patches

Don't you like when distributions decide they are going to patch your program so it works worse? And not only it makes your program work worse, you loose your precious time debugging problems that don't really exist.

Ok, i know i blogged about that before, but the problem is still not fixed so i keep whining about it.

  1. With things like this happening, it's really no wonder Firefox didn't want to get all mixed up in it.

  2. Clueless packagers... I did drop poppler patch from Pardus packages when you told me it didn't even print! :-)

  3. I'll throw this back - why doesn't the upstream adopt and fix the poppler patch? It is clearly broken to ship embedded xpdf code in every pdf reader...

  4. I think you should state the name of the distro that makes this things in the body of the post...

  5. @anonymous #2: even if having xpdf code embedded is not a great idea, at this moment that code is quite well tested and working. You can't throw away tested code for a patch that makes the application use code untested and not completely working in some cases, just because you dislike embedded code.
What you propose could be an idea only if the patch would *not* introduce *any* regession. But, as you can see, there are quite some, that wild patching is even worse than the embedded code.

  6. And what is truly great and wonderful about said distro is that you, the author of the original work, can go on bended knee before the "Grand Council" at the appointed time (of which you will not be informed) and beg them to stop mutilating your work. And when they tell you "We know better than you, our patch well remain. STFU," the nature of the universe becomes clear.

Suddenly someone elses behaviour over two years ago makes sense.
