Dear lazyweb: Which PS2 game to buy?
I just got hold of a PS2 and all the games i've ever played on a PS2 is "Guitar Hero 3". So i'm looking for suggestions of the "best game ever for the PS2".
I'll second Shadow of the Colossus and its predecessor Ico. These are some of the few games that I've seen elevate the genre to an art. But if you're into rhythm games maybe you want to try more of the same? A better idea of what other games you've enjoyed would help...
Shadow of the Collossus is very arty and atmosheric. But not the most enjoyable game IMHO.
God of War is just pure fun, totally perfected Hack and Slay with a very adult amazing story and great levels etc.
Metal Gear 2/3 are also really cool.
I played lots of PS2 games, but those were the best (GTA is not my thing)
If you _only_ want to buy one game, then it would probably have to be God of War II. It has not been matched on any other platform yet. It really is that good. Pure perfection. It was Sonys fare well game that really showed how great PS2 games can be.
But I would get them both and they are totally worth it. Read a few reviews or watch video reviews.
completely off-topic: I'm having problems with KPDF in KDE 3.5.10 - I know, it's not supported any more. However, I also can't migrate (we actually use GNOME as a DM)...
KPDF is the ONLY PDF viewer we've managed to find (we tried evince, even Adobe's own Acrobat) that can print the PDF files we get - usually through your 'force rasterization' hack. However, it doesn't stay checked between jobs, and I'd like it to remain so - if only because it actually prints something, and it takes only a couple seconds to do so instead of half an hour a page.
Please note that pretty much all PDF files we get are (rather bad quality) scans, thus why we're completely unconcerned by the lack of vector graphics capabilities.
I've recently got a PS2 myself and I was surprised just how many excellent games there are out there for it. Here are my favourite games:
God of War God of War II Okami Gun Psychonauts Shadow of the Colossus (I wish I had this one) Prince of Persia the Sands of Time Primal The Thing Beyond Good and Evil
* Gran Turismo 4 * Ratched & Clank series is quite enjoyable * Final Fantasy X (I have XII too, but didn't finish it) * And if you liked Ratched & Clank you could try to find Jak & Daxter as well. * GTA , always good.
Have fun! Got my PS2 almost 10 years now and am still not completely bored with it. As you can see, there are plenty of good games out there.
MGS2 was also fun, although I disliked the blonde guy aside from the sword fight. I kind of liked the hearing-the-seagulls too, and the pretty sunlight when you move from shell to shell. It also had a really good amount of variety. I feel that with MGS3 it had gotten kind of repetitive. I don't know, the jungle is not really my favourite of settings in a game. I guess that's why I loved MGS1 & 2 so much.
But the storyline *certainly* makes it worthwhile either way, if you're into a nice thrillingly complex story, as am I. Half-Life 2 (and episodes of course) have also had me hooked. The story isn't extremely deep, but something about the abstraction and abundance of mystery, creates a compelling atmosphere. Morgan Freeman is imho one of the best protagonists (along with Snake). I've played that game *so* many times, it has a nice set of characters. And of course, Alex Vance ;-)
Probably something like Shadow of the Colossus or God of War II.
ReplyDeleteFinal Fantasy X and Kingdom Hearts 1 or 2.
ReplyDeleteMetal Gear Solid 3. And you're done.

Okami
ReplyDelete@Tim: I've not been into gaming for a long time, the last game i finished is afair Return to Castle Wolfenstein and my all time favorites are Speedball 2, Sensible World of Soccer, Colonization and Half Life
ReplyDeleteshadow of the colossus is REALLY great!
ReplyDeleteStar Wars The Force Unleashed is also great... nice/long story and very good graphics for a PS2 game :)
Hi, Albert. If you can get it, you have to play Rez. This is my favorite PS2 game by far.
ReplyDelete.hack//GU if you have the time for a wicked fun, yet long RPG.
ReplyDeleteShadow of the Collosus is very awesome, too.
Any of the Tekken games are fantastic fun fighting games.
Ratchet and Clank games are hilarious, cartoony, platforming and shooting.
The Burnout games are mad crash-happy fun that steer away from the sometimes maddening attention to realism that many racing games today emphasize.
And yes, Metal Gear Solid 3 is as good as it's hyped up to be.
If you like music games try "Parapa The Rapper" or "Incredible Crisis!" all PS1 games. For PS2 you can try ICO.
ReplyDeleteKATAMARI DAMACY
ReplyDelete:) funniest thing ever
I always enjoyed Zone of the Enders (+sequel). Was the reading I bought my PS2.
ReplyDeleteStupid T9. Reading=reason in the comment above.
ReplyDeleteGTA
ReplyDeleteSSX
SingStar
MetalGear Solid
Gran Turismo 4 if you like racing games.

For a ralley racing game: "w3c evolved" or maybe (not so good looking, but a better simulation) Colin Mc Rae (spelling?).
ReplyDeleteGod of War II
ReplyDeleteThe Ratchet and Clank games! Or if you're a fan - Harvey Birdman
ReplyDeleteThe Tomb Raider games are usually good fun too

The whole Wipe Out series (best racing games ever) and the special controller for it.
ReplyDeleteAlso Tekken is pretty decent.
It's a bit difficult to find, but Gitaroo Man was my absolute most favorite PS2 game. (Despite the title, it has nothing to do with Guitar Hero.)
ReplyDeleteForgot to mention SSX3
ReplyDelete* Gran Turismo 4

But, I digress..
@ Shaun Reich
ReplyDeleteIt's Gordon Freeman and Alyx Vance. Half-Life is my favorite franchise :-)
@Arkadiusz
ReplyDeleteHaha, this just proves how tired I was yesterday :)
I can't believe I said Morgan Freeman, hehe.
