Canon Ixus 850

I'm planning buying a Canon Ixus 850 if i can get one for a reasonable price (between 300 for a barebone one and 350€ with extras) before going to akademy 2007. Anyone has first experience with it and want to give some comment? Please abstain people that have a Olympus/Sony/wathever :-)

See you on Saturday on Glasgow :-)

I have the 850 and I can not recommend it any more highly. The only problem that I've ever had with it was when I first got it and tried to use it with digikam I had to put it as a mass storage device, but that's been fixed either because of a new release of kubuntu or digikam. It's incredibly easy to use, the face detection and optical image stabilization are wonderful and you even get enough manual control to override the auto settings (low-light or fast-action pictures sometimes need to be set at a higher ISO). Anyway, I highly recommend this camera.

Hi Albert, I think that the newer IXUS are not as good quality-wise as older models, but the 850 is a good buy nonetheless. If you want it, go for it. However, I would advise you to try the Fuji Finepix F31FD. It's a really great camera at a very low price (I have seen it at 205 Euro, don't know about the actual price). I would recommend it over the Ixus at any time.

I have some first hand experience with it and can only recommend it. The only (and I really mean it!) disadvantage is that there's no indicator for the battery charge. When it warns you that the battery is nearing depletion it's already too late. My advice is to order an 850 and a second battery.

(Beware: the 900 has no image stabilizer and neither the 900 nor the 950 have the same wide angle zoom that the 850 has.)

As this picture shows, I am a big fan of Canon's point-and-shoot models. I have had the 800 for a year now; a friend of mine bought the 850 recently. Both are great cameras. The image stabilizer is a nifty feature. The pictures are the best I have seen from point-and-shoots and there are some manual controls (if you want more, you'll have to go with an SLR :). Overall, it's a really good camera. Highly recommended. The fact that there is no battery status indicator really sucks though.
