American English speakers: Kiev or Kyiv ?

A while ago there was a merge request created for KGeography asking to change Kiev to Kyiv saying "this is the official transliteration of the name for the city".

But that's not what the default text in KGeography shows, the default text in KGeography not the official names of places, the default text in KGeography is the American English translation of KGeography, that's why it says Poland and not Polska.

So question for you American English speakers, if you wanted to write the name of the capital of Ukraine, would you write Kiev or Kyiv?

KDE Randa Meetings 2014 Day 4

Time flies when you're in good company, i planned to blog every day and now i realize we're on day 4 already.

Well, here comes some of the things i've been doing
* Participated in a few discussions about "the KDE SDK" Aleix seems very promising to recruit new developers :) Let's see if I can convince Aleix to blog about it
* KGeography port to KF5 started by David Gil is now complete.
* Started and finished Blinken port to KF5
* Made some patches for some frameworks while porting KGeography

Some of the cool things I've seen:
* kdenlive cleaning up their code to ease maintaince
* GCompris, a nice educational tool for children
* The KF5 Book is shaping up nicely
* Lots of KF5 porting and refining everywhere

Let's keep rolling!

Moved from Berlios

This weekend we learnt that Berlios would be shutting down at the end of the year. I went over there and realized i had three things in Berlios:
* The webpage of your favorite geography learning tool KGeography
* The webpage of the ioslave that lets you access the pre-http "web" kio_gopher
* The code of the ROAM 3D viewer I coded for my Master Thesis r3v

For the KGeography and kio_gopher webpages I've chosed userbase, in case of KGeography reusing the existing one that was quite good and for kio_gopher creating a small one from scratch.

For r3v I've went with gitorious, not sure it is the best code hosting around but i just wanted a quick place to dump this coded i created in 2005 and i already had an account in gitorious :D

KDE-EDU Paris meeting summary

So here's my KDE-EDU Paris meeting summary:
* 14 nice people, some people already knew like annma and carsten and new faces like jpwhiting and SaroEngels
* Fixed issues everywhere ktuberling, kalzium, kgeography, blinken, kate, catalan translation, ... Ok, not all are KDE-EDU related but we are KDE developers after all too, right? ;-)
* Fixed an ugly bug together with Jure 'JLP' Repinc about kickoff search not finding items when their GenericName was not defined, it results in ktrader syntax you have to check that properties exist before using them or you get a tree evaluation error, so it is not (GenericName contains Foo) or (Name contains Foo) but ((GenericName exists) and (GenericName contains Foo)) or (Name contains Foo)
* Together with apol we helped a bit Vladimir making Step compilable standalone and as part of playground-edu and BTW if you have not tried Step, do it NOW! It totally ROCKS.
* Helped SaroEngels with an okular problem on CanNotSayTheNamePlatform, it seems KMimeType::findByPath always returns text/plain on the CanNotSayTheNamePlatform so it's actually not a problem in okular.
